John 1:35-37 --- The next day again John (the Baptist) was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
John the Baptist's goal was never to amass a following but instead to point the way to the coming of Jesus. However, as people are apt to do, many followed him. What is amazing is once Jesus shows up, John doesn't hesitate to point Him out every chance he gets. Even more amazing is when his followers left him to follow Jesus, we don't see him throwing a fit or getting upset. Nope, because for others to go follow Jesus was the fulfillment of his life's mission and his entire ministry!
I mean John is standing around with a few guys. No idea what they're doing, what they're talking about, but Jesus walks by. It doesn't say he stopped and talked or gave a sermon, he just comes strolling by and I just see/hear it in my mind's eye, John gets excited. He points and says, "Guys look! I mean really, really take a close look over there! That's Jesus, the Lamb of God! The Messiah! It's really Him. I've met Him and seen Him!"
These guys had been following John around. More than likely had been baptized in water by him. They'd repented of sin and had been listening to him shout to anyone and everyone to make straight the path for the coming of the Lord. So, for John to get fired up and start pointing at Jesus, saying REALLY LOOK at Jesus over there…That's Him! This impacted those guys who knew John and trusted him. It moved them to immediately leave their comfort zone of John and his ministry, to go follow a random Nazareth carpenter walking down the street!
Stop and think about this. What John got excited about and pointed out, those who trusted him and walked with him went and followed it.
Let that sink in for a minute then consider these questions.
Christian, what is it you're excited about in life?
What is it that you point to and share with those who trust you?
What is your mission or ministry in life?
Just a few things to think and pray about today.
