John 6:16-21 -- When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
Today we see one of the big miracles of Jesus. Walking on the water. Not some Las Vegas style street magic but walking across the rough waves on the Sea of Galilee. In Matthew chapter 14 and Mark chapter 6 we have details from other disciples that say Jesus told them to go on ahead in the boat.
So, stop and think about this. Jesus told them to get in the boat and go. They obey Him and, in that obedience, end up in an intense storm. They are rowing and rowing, into the wind, and are only halfway across the Sea of Galilee. How tiring and frustrating it must've been!
Christian, have you ever found yourself being obedient, following the Lord, and you end up in a storm, with the wind and waves beating against you? I know I have many times. As a matter of fact, most of the time when we follow Jesus' direction, we'll find ourselves going against the wind and flow of this world.
What's amazing is Jesus watched over them the whole time. Even though He wasn't there physically He knew where they were and in His perfect timing, He came walking upon the very waves that battered their ship. They of course were frightened, but He put them at ease with His words.
Beloved, I don't know about you, but this event is one that I cling to in my life. When the wind and waves rise and beat down upon my family. When we follow Him, and things just aren't moving and sometimes seem to get worse. I take great comfort and peace in knowing that Jesus knows exactly where we're at and He stands above the very wind and waves of every storm that comes against us.
Christian, what do you cling to in your storms? If it's anything other than Jesus, then let go of it, don't wait another second, look for Him, run to Him, cry out to Him. Go to Him in prayer, be anchored in reading the Word, and be encouraged knowing He is with you in the middle of it all. He knows right where you are.
That's where things went on today's journey. I pray you get into the Word today. See and hear Him for yourself.
You are loved. You are prayed over. You are not alone.
