John 5:1 -- Afterward Jesus returned to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish holy days.
Our journey through John has brought us to chapter five! Today was spent reading over the entire chapter a few times and praying over this new part of the adventure.
The chapter five overview reveals a common theme Jesus runs into: OPPOSITION.
Opposition: The act of opposing; attempt to check, restrain or defeat; Hostile or contrary action or condition; Resistance or dissent, expressed in action or argument.
We all know what opposition looks and feels like in our own lives. From our own internal opposition, to worldly, family, work, and even church. Many times, that opposition can be for our good, other times not so much. One thing most will agree on is we don't generally like dealing with it or go seeking it out regularly.
What is seen in the overview of this chapter is Jesus doing the will of the Father and being opposed for it. First John 2:6 jumps to mind as I read this chapter over and over today. If we profess to abide in Jesus Christ, then we owe a debt to walk as He walked. From what I see today that means to do the will of God, expect opposition, and then stand firm on the Word of God and in His will against it. No matter what.
Jesus has some many things to say in the back half of this chapter as well, so I look forward to diving into it deeper as we journey through. If you have five minutes today, read John Chapter five. See what the Lord has for you in it!
