John 2:5 --- His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
As we continue our journey in chapter two of John we're still in the middle of the wedding and they're still out of wine. Yesterday was a deep dive into Jesus' response to His mother informing him of the problem. Today, the Lord led this adventure back over to Mary and her amazing response to it all.
One thing to point out is in five short verses Mary has already given us a beautiful and solid example of how we should conduct ourselves in the midst of issues and storms.
The wine runs out. She learned of this somehow. She knew how embarrassing and damaging this could be for the newly married couple. So, what does she do? She goes to Jesus! She tells him about it. Note, she doesn't ask him directly to do anything, she just simply tells Jesus. Mary's actions and words both go directly to Jesus!
His response to her was not, "No problem, Mom, let me fix this right up.". Instead, He addresses her as dear woman, defining a change in their relationship, and makes clear it is not time for Him to be publicly revealed. His response, while respectful, made clear that His time as her son and taking direct care of Mom changing, as He moved into doing His Father's work.
It's interesting to think about Mary and how faced with this reply from Jesus, she doesn't respond in an emotional way to any of it. She doesn't fall apart or get upset. As far as historians can figure Joseph had passed away by this point (no solid record though), Jesus is her oldest son. She sees Him here with several disciples even. She knows what this means. Then on top of all that there is still the pressing issue of no wine!
Stop and think about this, Mary could've easily made this all about her, but instead her actions and words clearly show she was thinking of the newly married couple and their dilemma, and that Jesus was the only solution.
She turns from Jesus to the servants and says, "Whatever He says to you, do it.".
Now if that's not words to live by every single day, amid every single storm, I don't know what would be!
Whatever Jesus says to you……DO IT!
We're commanded in God's word (1 John 2:6) to walk as He walked, to conduct ourselves how He conducted Himself. So, we better be in the Word, seeing His conduct, and hearing His words regularly!
In every step of this situation Mary's actions and words have pointed directly to Jesus. Her thoughts were on others and helping them, and the only thing we see her do about it is go to Jesus, talk to Jesus, point others, who by the way were part of the solution, to listen and obey Jesus. No gossip here. No emotional feelings roller coaster making it all about her. Just Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
Just some things to think about today. Don't take my word for it, be the Berean, get into your Bible, and see what God has to say to you!
Please know you're not alone. If you need prayer, to talk, or just someone to listen please reach out. You are loved and you are prayed over this day.
