John 6:28-29 -- Then they asked Him, “What are we to do, so that we may habitually be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered, “This is the work of God: that you believe [adhere to, trust in, rely on, and have faith] in the One whom He has sent.”
Jesus continues to engage with this large crowd that has been following Him from town to town, miracle to miracle, even crossing the sea to follow. He has already confronted them about the true intentions of their hearts. That it wasn't even because of the signs/miracles He'd done, it was because He fed them bread and fish.
The crowd, still thinking about bread, asks Jesus what do we need to be doing so they can do the works of God. Jesus, knowing they're still thinking about bread, keeps pointing them to the truth, by giving a simple reply.
"This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent."
This is Jesus' one sentence reply to a giant crowd of hurting, desperate, and self-focused people. He made it as simple as possible. No overwhelming list of things, just the simple truth of a small step to that narrow path to life. Which in contrast to the religious rules, rites, and regulations of this time, it was light years apart.
Christian, how complicated is your relationship with the Lord right now? Is it so complicated it's become overwhelming? Daunting? Burdensome even?
I tell you, there is much that goes into a relationship with anyone, not just the Lord. It takes time. It takes effort. If it's a genuine relationship it takes letting your inner walls down and being real.
So, if you'll really slow down and listen to Jesus, watch Him; you'll see His yoke really is easy, and His burden is light, because you'll find over and over, He's the one whose already paid the price, carried the load, and carries us in it and through it, when we let Him!
Beloved, if you're struggling with walking with or getting back to walking with Him, stop looking at yourself and at the list of work you need to do. They asked Jesus what work do we need to do. He didn't give them work, he told them to believe.
So, start looking at Him. Believe in Jesus whom God sent. Start with that tiny little step. Talk to Him in prayer. Dive into His Word and listen to Him speak. See His character and how He acts. Try it and see!
A silly image and song came to my mind from an old Playstation game called 'Parappa the Rapper'. The lyric goes:
Watcha gotta do?
I gotta believe.
You gotta do what?
You gotta do what?
I gotta believe!!!
Well, that's where things went today. LOL! I love walking with the Lord, it's such an adventure. Be the Berean and get into your Bible and see for yourself!
This weekend is my wife's birthday and our anniversary, so we're heading out for an adventure! I appreciate your prayers over her as she's had some medical things come up recently and every prayer counts.
You are loved. You are prayed over. You are not alone.
