John 4:46-47 -- So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.
Yesterday, we saw Jesus welcomed back to Galilee because they had seen all He'd done at the Temple, which was cleansing it and doing signs/miracles. So, in this area He grew up in, it was enough to buy Him a welcome home, but not enough to interest people in who He truly was. They had a false familiarity, thinking they already knew who he was.
Today we find news of Jesus' return to Galilee spread quickly. The official lived in Capernaum, which was about seventeen miles from Cana, where Jesus was. The news didn't travel that far because everyone was interested in knowing who He was though. To them, they knew He was Mary and Joseph's son. That's no big deal. However, they'd seen Him do some wild things at the temple. Now that they considered news.
Recall, the Samaritan woman runs back to the town of Sychar and says, "Hey this guy knows things, he told me everything I've ever done. Could he be the Christ?". She was driven beyond the miracle and truly desired to know who Jesus was. The people here in his hometown area weren't concerned with His identity, but instead what could He do for them.
Christian, what excites you about Jesus? Is it the miracles, signs, and wonders? Is it what He can do right now for you, your spouse, or even your child? Does your hunger for coming after Jesus end when the fish and bread are multiplied and passed out?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being excited over the miracles of Jesus. We should be! There is absolutely nothing wrong with coming to the Lord with your needs. As Christians we MUST come to Him with everything! We should cling tight to Him in dark and dire times! However, if our desire, drive, and deepest longing for Jesus is fulfilled with what He can provide for us right now, we've messed up, because we've missed who He is.
Read the words of the Samaritan woman again, as she rushes into the town of Sychar.
John 4:29 -- “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”
She not only shared the miracle but shared her desire to know who He was with everyone too! Now, please hear me clearly, if my child were sick and at the point of death, you better believe I'd run to Jesus, fall flat on my face at His feet, and ask Him for miraculous healing. However, it's when we go to Jesus seeking, 'The guy who does miracles' and stop there that we've missed it.
Christian, choose to let His miracles, His power, His signs, His wonders, always bring you back to WHO HE IS! Don't stop at the hand when it gives you something, look to the face of the one giving.
Who is this Jesus that can do these magnificent wonders? Why would He do this for me? What kind of love must Jesus have to do this? Let me know more about Him! Let me walk where He walks! Where is He staying because I want to go stay with Him!
Christian, stop and think about what it is that excites you about Jesus. Don't be deceived, really truly stop and take inventory. Pray and ask God to search you and show you. Get with a Christian brother or sister and talk about it.
Well, the journey ends here for today. Please never take my word for anything, I'm just a guy the Lord directed to share my quiet time openly and publicly, so be the Berean and get into your Bible, pray, read, listen, watch, and let His Word, His Truth be your guide!
You are loved. You are prayed over. You are not alone.
